What defines “The New Outdoor Living Space?” What are clients asking for across the country?
The new outdoor living space is rapidly changing. It has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry in the last 15 years. With the paver patio boom, the outdoor room concept has skyrocketed.
The wooden decks are even making a come back with the new composite materials. Homeowners also have the ability to use multiple colors and styles with their new creations.
What’s really changing the outdoor living space is having components and separate areas. We are now designing in smaller spaces with separate room styles from paver materials, decking, flagstone and many other surfaces. These different materials are used to separate changed elevations and plant material as the border.
Outdoor Bars, Outdoor Kitchens, and Pergolas have seem to be at the forefront of this changing outdoor living climate. The majority of our current design projects include a pergola design and a outdoor door kitchen large or small. The outdoor bar is one of my favorite features in the new world of outdoor living design.
With outdoor couches and coffee tables the standard table and chairs are becoming a thing of the past. Also with the outdoor bar, guest can sit around talking and drinking while the grill master is at work.
There is nothing that says outdoor living like the beloved fire pit. What a long way this feature has come. It used to be just a round brick ring in the middle of the patio. Nowadays, we design them in all shapes and sizes. With the ability to run a gas line we can really modernize the fire pit. As a designer, I personally love to design more modern fire pits as opposed to a simple fireplace.
The outdoor living space has become an area of art and space. In the past few years we have also seen the paver patio space change. Potential clients are calling to have us redesign that big square or two hump shape patio with the block walls. Clients are asking for something unique. Like stucco or natural stone walls, spill-over and pond water features. We have also seen a huge boom in low voltage LED lighting to accent their new outdoor living space.
Teams of designers and contractors are starting to work together across the country adding huge value to an industry that was once basic. The Outdoor Living trade shows are becoming more unique each year with a fast growing audiences base. Pretty soon outdoor Living Spaces will be in the integral part of the new custom built home.
